Costa Blanca League

Founded several years ago by Don Manolo Garay, retired Director Costa Blanca News, the Costa Blanca League (North) has gone from strength to strength and now, due to that success, has two competitive Divisions with a relegation and promotion format.   The CB League is run by a governing body which includes a Matchplay Secretary and General Committee consisting of representatives from the participating Societies.

The CB League is very well organised using various courses throughout the Comunidad Valenciana. Due to the number of matches that now have to be played the League meets every  month throughout the season. Although being a competitive day it is also a great social event when members of all societies can come together to talk about the trials and tribulations of playing the wonderful game of golf.

COSTA BLANCA LEAGUE SEASON 2011/2012

NOVEMBER MATCHES

After all the rain over the last month the CBL Organiser, Richard Davis, was amazed that the matches were able to be played at all but they were lucky to play in conditions ideal for golf. The fairways and greens at Villaitana were in magnificent condition and although the bunkers were mostly unplayable this was understandable. Tony advised him that Oliva Nova was also very playable and in good condition despite the continuous downpours of the previous few days.

He would like to thank both courses for their hard work to get the courses playable and in such good condition.

In Division 1 Oliva Nova and Don Cayo continue to impress but with Levante , Campbell Lamont Golf and El Patio hot on their heels January’s fixtures look very interesting and could well decide the outcome of the league.

In Divison 2 the Costa Blanca maintained their lead at the top after a hard match with White Coast but Pego's great win over the Orba Warblers puts them close behind with a match in hand. Their January fixture at Villaitana should be quite competitive.

OCTOBER MATCHES

Friday 28th October 2011 saw the selected Divison One and Division Two Teams meet at La Sella Golf Resort for the Monthly League Match. Unfortunately the weather, as you all probably know, took a turn for the worse and due to the extreme weather conditions the matches were abandonded. The Organisers of the League and the Management of La Sella were concerned not only for the course itself, but also for the safety of the golfers. As agreed in our September Meeting, Rule 17 came into play and all teams not able to start their round of golf, halved their matches.  Ironically, the other CB League Teams playing at Villaitana Levante only 50 kms South, managed to complete their matches in blustery but mainly dry weather conditions.

Results at Villaitana Levante:

Division 1

Marina Alta 4 points v Levante 6 points
A good start to the season for newly promoted Levante beating Marina Alta on their home course, they are obviously going to be challenging for the title this year.

El Patio 6 points v Club de Golf Oliva Nova 4 points
Back to winning ways for last seasons Champions but what a fight they were given.
Unfortunately Oliva NOva were let down by 2 of their players not showing and in 2 games they had a single player against 2. Despite this Brian Redfearn pulled off the shock of the round beating El Pation Captain, Peter Lane and his partner.  Commiserations to Peter who won't welcome the publicitiy but I'll balance that by congratulating him on his tremendous win in the Valencian Seniors at Oliva Nova.

Division 2
Club de Golf Peer Gynt 7 points v White Coast 3 points
Peer Gynt bounced back after their heavy loss the previous month taking full advantave on their home course.

Our next matches take place on Friday 26th November at Oliva Nova Golf and Villaitana Levante when I hope we will have better weather.

SEPTEMBER MATCHES

Friday saw a return to action after the Summer recess for the Costa Blanca News Premier Golf League. The 1st Division was played at La Sella and the 2ndDivision at Bonalba. The North of our region had torrential rain and storms on Thursday therefore there was some concern that the matches at La Sella would go ahead. Our concerns were unfounded as the rain stopped and whilst the fairways at La Sella were very wet and had little run the greens were in good condition. Bonalba escaped the rain and the course was in good condition but after a long dry summer the rain there would have been welcomed by the greenkeeping staff.

In the 1st Division there were some very close games and some surprising results which highlight that it’s going to be a very competitive season!

Champions El Patio were defeated 6 – 4 by old rivals Marina Alta, Last year’s runners up CL Golf were defeated 8 – 2 by Oliva Nova and newly promoted Don Cayo defeated Montgo 6 – 4. Promoted Champions of the 2nd Division Levante had a bye and join the battle in October.

So Club de Golf Oliva Nova go straight to the top where I believe they will take some knocking off!

In the 2nd Division at Bonalba the Costa Blanca Golf Society got off to a winning start on their own course defeating Peer Gynt 10 – 0 (revenge for last year). Newcomers CL Golf La Sella defeated White Coast 7 – 3 with 1 player short, they are likely to be strong candidates for promotion in their first season in the league. Relegated Pego defeated Hole 19 8 – 2 and are strong favourites to bounce back to the 1st Division. Relegated Orba Warblers had a bye but join the battle with us in October. I’m sure the 2nd Division will be just as competitive as the 1st Division and it was great to see all the teams mixing in the bar afterwards with their opponents!

On the 28th October we are back at La Sella and Villaitana Levante and I look forward to another enjoyable day of gollf.

Inter Society Challenge &  League Presentation Lunch Friday 13th May

Thirteen teams of 8 players took part in the annual Inter Society Challenge at Club de Golf Oliva Nova and our final event of the 2010/2011 season. The course was presented in excellent condition and on a beautiful sunny day good scores were anticipated, we weren’t disappointed. In our usual format of better ball stableford each team had 4 pairs with 3 scores to count.  Trophies were provided by Club de Golf Oliva Nova for each member of the winning team and the top 4 scores from the individual pairs received green fees donated by the golf courses we have played this season, namely Bonalba, La Sella, Oliva Nova and Villaitana. The results were as follows:

Individual Pairings:
1st            Tony Carroll and Denise Cooper                      Montgo GS                           41 points

2nd           Campbell Lamont and Nico Lubig                     CL Golf                                41 points

3rd           Peter Lane and Graham Crouch                       El Patio GS                           41 points

4th           Colin Foster and Angel Vaca                           CDG Oliva Nova                     41 points

The pairings were separated by count backs on the back 9, back 6 and back 3 holes

Team Event

1st            El Patio GS                             118 points

2nd           CDG Oliva Nova                       116 points

3rd            Montgo GS                             115 points

A close contest indeed with fantastic scoring and El Patio defying home advantage and proving that good players can score well anywhere! Our thanks go to Tony Carroll for organising the tee draw and the scorecards so well and Club de Golf Oliva Nova for hosting us so magnificently.

All teams then attended an excellent  lunch and our thanks go to David and Simon Gardner-Brown for the quality and service provided. The Trophies and Prizes were then presented by Richard Davis and Tony Carroll to the winners of the Inter Society Challenge and the Winners and Runners Up of each division in the League as follows:

Division 1

Champions            El Patio GS

Runners Up           CL Golf

Division 2

Champions            Levante GS

Runners Up           Don Cayo GS

(Both teams promoted to Division 1)

Unfortunately our President Manuel Garay was unable to be present but, on his behalf, Richard Davis congratulated all the winning teams and thanked everyone for their continued support of our golf league. Our new league season starts again on Friday the 30th September when we will be joined by a new team, CL Golf La Sella. With 14 teams we are sure to have another great season of competitive golf played in the right spirit intended.  We wish all our players and their families a wonderful Summer.

Some of us will be representing our league against the Vega Baja League in the Garay Cup on the 10th June at La Sella when we will be looking to retain the trophy we won last year, no problem!

Costa Blanca News Premier Golf League - April 2011

The Final Round of Division 1 matches were played at Oliva Nova on Friday 29th April and what a finish was promised with something to play for in every game.  It didn't disappoint!

I watched most of the matches up to the 6th hole and then had to leave convinced we had new champions but how wrong could I be?

With a weakened team and not relying on the results of any other game El Patio defeated Marina Alta to retain the title they won in style last year.

Many congratulations on winning the league once again to the Society with the smallest squad.

Montgo produced a stunning performance to draw with Campbell Lamont GS and thus condemn the Orba Warblers to relegation after they lost to a strong Club de Golf Oliva Nova team on their home course.

Commiserations to CL Gof and Marina Alta who have both had excellent seasons but faltered at the final hurdle.

Orba Warblers now join the elite group in Division 2 where the golf is more relaxed and played with greater style.  I am sure tey will bounce back again next year.

I look forward to seeing you all at the Inter Socety Challange and Prize Presentation Lunch on Friday 13th May.

Costa Blanca News Premier Golf League - March 2011

Considering the weather of last week we were very lucky to be able to play on Friday. At Oliva Nova the course was in very good condition and with no rain on the morning buggies were allowed out and the course dried out quickly. At La Sella they had closed the course on the Thursday and didn’t allow buggies out at all on the Friday. La Sella were obviously protecting the course for important competitions coming up but it did cause serious problems for those teams with players needing buggies. The course was reportedly in great condition and I’m happy to say that all matches were played with full teams and that this decision did not appear to adversely impact the results.

Match Report Division 1

In the 1st Division some very close matches as usual and everything is still to play for in the final matches in April. El Patio were defeated for the first time this year by CL Golf but have still retained top spot whilst Marina Alta just lost to Oliva Nova in the tightest of matches with two games halved.

Montgo defeated Pego in the local derby and sadly Pego are now relegated to the 2nd Division. They are a strong society and under Steve Patton I am sure they will bounce back next year.

The final matches on the 29th April  will determine whether El Patio retain their title, however Marina Alta and CL Golf will be trying to win convincingly to overtake them. Orba Warblers and Montgo will be fighting to win their games to avoid taking the 2nd relegation place! All in all it will be a very exciting end to a very good season.

Friday 29th April at Oliva Nova

Oliva Nova v Orba Warblers

CL Golf v Montgo

El Patio v Marina Alta

Match Report Division 2

In the 2nd Division Levante who were already crowned champions didn’t take pity on the Costa Blanca consigning them to bottom spot! Oh the pain! In the final matches Don Cayo’s defeat of Peer Gynt meant they took the second promotion spot after narrowly missing out last year. Congratulations to Steve Moores and his team and with Levante we wish you the best of luck in the 1st Division next year. Commiserations to Peer Gynt and White Coast on just missing out on promotion. All the teams (apart from the Costa Blanca) have improved this year and it’s made for a very enjoyable season (for most)!

The season isn’t over and in addition to the final round of 1st Division matches we have the Inter Society Challenge and prize presentation at Oliva Nova on Friday the 13th May, please make sure you have the usual teams of 8 players available.

Costa Blanca News Premier Golf League February 2011

Report from Friday's matches at Bonalba and Villaitana.  The Levante Course was in excellent condition however, I am sure you are all aware of the problems that Bonalba have been having with their greens and as I am still connected with Bonalba, I can assure you that they are working extremely hard to get the course back in good condition.  An expensive new irrigation system has been installed on each green which will improve the watering and drainage and the overall condition. Some of the greens look worse than they actually play and I sincerely hope they did not impact the quality of your golf.

Match Report Division 1

The race for the title is no less exciting. Defending champions, El Patio, had an emphatic win against Pego GS and we now go into the final 2 rounds with any one of the top 3 teams having a chance to become Champion.

Match Report Division 2

I am delighted to announce that Levante Golf Society are now Champions of Division 2. After their hard fought win they now have an unassailable lead.  Their Captain of the day, Anne Edwards, crowned their win with a magnificent hole in one on the 15th hole (5 wood).  I understand that those lucky enough to be still there were treated to a celebratory drink!  Many congratulations to Anne and Levante GS on the winning of a well deserved title.  The standard of the golf in Division 2 has improved dramatically this year with all the other 5 tems having the capability to win the 2nd promotion spot in their final league games in March.

The bottom 4 teams are all fighting to avoid relegation.  Game on!

Costa Blanca News Premier Golf League January 2011

The shotgun start with 120 players went much better than expected and I would like to thank you all for your patience and disciplined support.

The Villaitana Levante Course was in excellent condition considering Thursday’s downpours and provided good value for money golf. I apologise for the tee positions which was the only downside to the day. Not all the holes were forward but the lower index par 4’s and par 3’s off the blue tees provided a distinct advantage to some players off higher handicaps - this will be corrected for our matches in February.

Match Results

Division 1

In Division 1 Marina Alta made the best use of home advantage in defeating Montgo. They are having their best ever season and whilst El Patio and CL Golf have games in hand they are going to be difficult to catch!

Division 2

In Division 2 Levante stretched their lead at the top despite a vey close match with Downhill. The shock of the day has to be Peer Gynt defeating Costa Blanca by 4 games to 1. Admittedly this was their home course but they played really well and were just too good on the day.
